The gentleness of the estuary
Once the start and end point of a great portage linking the St. Lawrence with the Maritime Provinces, Notre-Dame-du-Portage was on the travel route of Amerindians, missionaries and coureurs de bois in those days.
Today it is a peaceful village on the estuary shore. You can see across the river to Laurentian capes, with Île aux Lièvres in between.
To the right, the wide opening of the Saguenay Fjord lies on the horizon. The scent of algae is unmistakable; the sea begins here and whales are never too far away.
Visitors can indulge in spa tourism, fish from the wharf, or bathe in a pool of heated seawater. People come from far away for bicycling. And the sunsets at Notre-Dame-du-Portage are always outstanding.
