A peaceful heaven hidden at the heart of a cove
Named by Champlain in the 17th Century, Port-au-Persil (Parsley Harbour) is a tiny hamlet posing delicately on a small bay of the St. Lawrence river.
It was founded in the early 19th Century by a Scot, Neil McLaren. In 1893, his son built the white wooden chapel still standing near the rocks by the water’s edge.
From the tops of the capes, a small road leads down to slowly reveal the small village of houses scattered at the mercy of the landscape. You can walk across the rocks from the wharf to the chapel (private but accessible). A brook leaps down a fall before expiring in the St Lawrence, which is almost open sea here, and where snow geese come to feed in season. A charming inn and welcoming B&Bs offer a superb panorama.
The charm of Port-au-Persil lies in its intimacy, serenity, and peaceful spirit isolated from the busy world. Please do not disturb …
