A peaceful heaven hidden at the heart of a cove

Named in the seventeenth century by the province’s founder, Champlain, Port-au-Persil (“parsley-haven”) because of the presence of this sea-herb, is a treasure certainly worth seeking out. A tiny hamlet that stands gently within the depths of a small bay on the shores of the St. Lawrence River, in the region of Charlevoix and just off of the main road (highway 138), the village was founded in the mid-nineteenth century by a Scotsman, Neil McLaren. In 1893, his son built a white wooden chapel located on the rocks of the riverbanks. Although McLarens’s son was destined to become a Presbyterian pastor, his faith did not prevent him from marrying a Catholic, news that surely must had left the village aflutter.

From the peaks of the capes, descend along the small road and slowly discover the little hamlet. Without a traditional village square, houses are scattered along the horizon, from the side of the mountain, to the shores of the river. Past the farmlands, which are interspersed with forest, trail down to the riverbanks, along the rocks and past the little quay, and all the way to the chapel (private property). A stream trickles into the falls that swell after a heavy rain, before ultimately reaching the river, soon turns into sea.

A stacked barnhouse with goats, built by German mercenaries during the nineteenth century, is reminiscent of a bygone era.

On the top of the hill, a charming inn, which was the summer resting place of Quebec painter Jean-Paul Lemieux, welcomes you and offers a wonderful panorama overlooking the creek and the Saint-Lawrence river. Along highway 138, you can visit an interesting art pottery gallery and workshop featuring original pieces of pottery.

Port-au-Persil is distinctive for its charm, serenity, and relaxed atmosphere, which set it apart from a fast-paced world. Enjoy the tranquility…and please keep the calm.
