The Saint-Lawrence pilots village facing the channel
Located at the heart of Île d’Orléans (classified historic area), Saint-Jean showcases delightful houses along the St. Lawrence shore that have seen generations of sailors born and die (often at sea) since the early days of New France.
The sailor’s cemetery extends to the tidal flats adjacent a red-roofed church (1734) sitting on shore like a shipwreck...
In the village centre, the Mauvide-Genest manor house (visit), built in the same period and recently restored, is the oldest and among the finest examples of New France architecture.
A true vegetable garden, Saint-Jean supplies Québec City markets with a great variety of flowers, all the fresh vegetables and gourmet favorites like strawberries, raspberries and maple products.
From Saint-Jean, the wonderfully solitary Route du Mitan crosses the island to Sainte-Famille, giving at its highest point a splendid view of the river and the Laurentians.
