A holiday village at the tip of an island
The village de Sainte-Pétronille is nestled on the southwest point of Île d’Orléans, right near Quebec City. It was here that the first French colonists settled on the island starting in 1648 and several hundred Hurons later took refuge for a time before settling near Loretteville.
The bourgeoisie of Québec City made it a resort destination in the 19th Century, attracted by the microclimate on the tip of the island. Largely anglophone, they gave the new village a special tone with a golf course (the oldest in America), an Anglican chapel that is admirably conserved, architecture that is unusual for the island (such as the studio of painter Horatio Walker), and the sumptuous Porteous estate with its Italian gardens.
Set out in a fan shape around a rocky point, the village offers its visitors a unique and grand panorama. To the south, freighters and passenger liners slip by on the St. Lawrence; to the west beyond Beauport Bay, Cape Diamond crowns the fortifications of Old Quebec; to the north, the impressive Montmorency Falls, 80 metres high, stand out against a mountain backdrop.
Sainte-Pétronille can be best appreciated on foot. One walk through the heart of the village offers an interpretation circuit that is both panoramic and cultural, while a second follows a rustic trail in the boreal oak forest, the most northerly forest of red oak on the continent.
A small village on a slope, verdant and shaded with charming white wooden houses, Sainte-Pétronille is draped in autumn with brilliant red and gold foliage. Visitors also come for its chocolate maker, vineyard and market garden. The village has earned recognition by Les Fleurons du Québec for the care it takes to embellish its public and private spaces.
