A land rich in history and landscapes
A few kilometres downriver from Montréal, Verchères is nestled harmoniously between the St. Lawrence to the north and rich farmland to the south.
The seigneury, founded in 1672 by François-Xavier Jarret, was highly vulnerable to Iroqouis attack. In 1692, his 14-year-old daughter Madeleine fought off an Iroquois attack lasting eight days. Her bronze statue by sculptor Louis-Philippe Hébert stands beside the seigneurial windmill built in 1734.
A window on the river, Parc des Pionniers offers a vantage point for admiring sunsets and cruise boats and freighters passing in front of the islands. A short distance away, discover the last workshop that makes flat-bottomed wooded boats called the Verchère.
Small working-class homes mainly built of wood are clustered around the church in the oldest part of the village.
